Stanford Health Policy Undergraduate Research Fellowships

This paid internship allows Stanford undergrads to spend the summer collaborating on faculty research projects pursuing answers to compelling and impactful health policy questions, globally or closer to home. The class of fellows will sit in the heart of our center and gain exposure to Stanford Health Policy’s experts through personal interactions, mentorship, and seminars. The full-time fellowship is designed for the Summer term, but successful fellows may have the option to stay on part-time in the subsequent school year.

Students selected for the summer internship will become Health Policy Research Fellows at Stanford Health Policy, joining this vibrant intellectual community.
"The fellowship enables students to work in the dynamic, interdisciplinary research and policy environment at Stanford Health Policy and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) on projects to improve health through better health policy," says Douglas K. Owens, chair of the Department of Health Policy in the Stanford School of Medicine and director of the Center for Health Policy at FSI. "It is a great opportunity and we look forward to working with students."
Eran Bendavid, the fellowship co-coordinator and an associate professor of medicine at Stanford Health Policy, noted that the internships are open to undergraduates from every part of the university.
"We are excited about working with talented undergraduate students who can bring skills, energy, and diverse perspectives to bear on some of the most complex questions facing humanity today,” Bendavid said.
The other coordinator of the summer program is Michelle Mello, a professor of law and health policy.
Current Stanford freshmen, sophomores and juniors may apply from any major; no prior experience is required. Around four summer internships will be offered and selection will be based on evidence of intellectual engagement, commitment to research, and fit with the applicant’s proposed mentors. The program stipend is $900 weekly, or $10,800 for the full 12 weeks, though fellows may interrupt their research for up to two weeks for summer vacations. Fellowships are in-person positions unless otherwise agreed by the faculty supervisor. Applicants need not identify a specific faculty member; the Fellowship Coordinators can arrange matches.
